The village of Lavaux-Sainte-Anne dates from the Merovingian period.
Lavaux-Sainte-Anne used to be a dependence of the principality of Liège. During the 13th century, a castle is built as well as a chapel dedicated to Sainte-Anne.
Around 1450, the castle of Lavaux was entirely conceived to hold up the assailants: moats, drawbridge, loopholes, machicolations and round towers (affording less hold for cannonballs), dominant donjon and ultimate refuge in the face of danger...
In 1630, in the heart of the Renaissance period the Baron de Rouveroy has the northern flank brought down giving an impression of space to the inner court. He also adorns the castle with a profusion of bricks, pilasters, and mullions. The adjoining fortified farm dates from the same period.
The Saint-Anne chapel is demolished and a parochial church is constructed in the centre of the village. After the French Revolution, the castle is put up for sale as national good.
Over the centuries, it has known a succession of owners and will finally be transferred to the League of Friends of the Castle founded by Madame Lemonnier. The league will restore the old residence, which will become a hunting museum and is accessible to the public.
Anecdote: during the Second World War, hundreds of crates were deposited secretly in the underground chambers of the castle. They contained paintings of the Bruges Museum as well as books from the Plantin Museum in Antwerp. It was thus with much discretion that the local gendarmes kept a watchful eye on these precious goods.
The Lavaux villagers are known by the sobriquet 'Petias' (small wild pears).
